Avant Flute Choir

The Avant Flute Choir is for advanced student flute players. In this ensemble young musicians will learn a variety of music specifically for flute, as well as arrangements of standard orchestra music. Students will be exposed to music from different periods of classical music, jazz, Latin–jazz, World Music, and will study applied music theory, improvisation, sight-reading and audition skills. In the event of an opening in the Philharmonic Orchestra flute section members of the Avant Flute Choir will have the first chance to audition. Members will be trained in large and small chamber music performances, an acquire skills in ensemble playing and teamwork. Members will perform three major concerts will have the opportunity to perform at various community venues throughout the year.

Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble offers an opportunity for percussionists to perform percussion ensemble music from the 20th and 21st centuries, and performs regularly each season. Members are encouraged to play many different percussion instruments including timpani, snare drum, bass drum, accessory instruments, xylophone, marimba, and ethnic percussion. Students are taught valuable chamber music skills and instructed on performing techniques, proper set-up of multiple percussion parts, playing advanced rhythms and taking care of instruments

Concert Wind Ensemble
Diane Wyant, Conductor

The Concert Wind Ensemble is designed to develop the overall ability of the young woodwind and brass musician. Students in this ensemble will perform band works at a grade 2-4 which is standard for most middle school ensembles. Concert Winds is also designed for the more proficient high school/middle school musician desiring to learn a new instrument to enhance the ensemble instrumentation/balance in their current school program. Students will have the opportunity to work in smaller ensembles and will perform 2-3 times during the year.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is an advanced wind ensemble for experienced students who play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.  Students will have the opportunity to perform classic band literature in addition to newly released band works.

Intermezzo String Ensemble
Ryo Fukuda, Conductor

The goal of this string ensemble is to prepare young musicians for progression to playing in a full orchestra. Members will perform string music that will build upon theoretical and musical concepts covered in the Prelude String Ensemble. Emphasis will be given to listening skills as related to playing in a large ensemble.

Prelude String Ensemble
Victoria Morton, Conductor

This ensemble provides a high quality introduction to important concepts of performing in an ensemble. Members will apply their technical knowledge of how to play their instrument to string orchestra literature, learn orchestra rehearsal techniques, learn musical terms, and understand basic music theory. Instruction includes understanding the role of the conductor, and learning to follow the conductor.
