The Philharmonic Orchestra Performs Chadwick, Gould, Anderson, Shostakovich and Piston
The San Jose Youth Symphony’s Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yair Samet, presents its 2019 Season Opener Concert to be held on Sunday, December 1, 2019, 5 pm, at the McAfee Performing Arts Center, 20300 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga, CA 95070.
The orchestra will perform works by American composers, opening with Chadwick’s lively and comical Overture to the Burlesque Opera Tabasco, and will conclude with Piston’s The Incredible Flutist. This concert will also feature a winner from the 2019 Young Artists’ Competition, proudly sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation. Outstanding young soloist, Severin Michael, cellist, will perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1.
Severin Michael is a senior at Saratoga High School, and has been playing cello since age 7. He is now in his ninth season with the San Jose Youth Symphony.
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast of the U.S. Founded over six decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The musicians of SJYS, all school-age youth, are chosen from more than 650 applicants through our annual auditions. The SJYS comprises 12 distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras, a Chamber orchestra, two flute choirs, two string ensembles, as well as winds, harp, saxophone, percussion and jazz ensembles.
